Figures and Loops

Boss Films presents Figures and Loops, a documentary exploring the world of artistic roller-skating.  Directed by David Regos and Walter Matteson.  A delightful look into the little known sub-culture that is artistic roller skating, Figures and Loops follows a group of competitors throughout the course of a skating season. From local competitions in small town California through to the highly competitive World Championships in Germany, this is a glitter-filled snapshot of what it takes to make it in this incredible underground sport.

Debut Documentary

Figures and Loops is the debut feature documentary for David Regos and Walter Matteson who met whilst studying in Berkeley, California where David discovered Walt’s intriguing past: at 17, he was the national roller skating champion. This discovery pitted Walt as the enigmatic centrepiece of the film, telling his story through the other characters from behind the camera.

Walt’s old coach, Keith, now coaches Makenzie, a free spirited, nine year old whose career thus far has been smooth sailing. She is starting to learn however, that natural talent can only take you so far. In contrast Heather is the U.S.A’s darling on wheels, a consummate champion. Mark is a middle-aged skater, striving to overcome nerves and conflicting judges on his path to the podium. And then there is David Jacques, the son of a champion, who traded his footy boots for skates in order to pursue his true passion.

Figures and Loops was produced almost entirely with the help of skaters, families, friends and favours. The film was edited by Steve Nemsick, who, after working on the film for a year, burnt down his apartment (with the film in it), crashed his roommate’s car, and concussed himself on a bicycle. As a result the film was completed at the end of 2004, three years after its beginnings in Walt’s trophy room in Monterey.

Travelling beyond roller derbies and discos, Figures and Loops offers some alternately offbeat and touching insights into the art and sport that is roller skating.
