The Cafe 80s

“Twenty, thirty years from now – I don’t know what we’ll be dressing like”, mused David lee Roth in 1986. “It won’t be like anything we’re familiar with, I know that.” Now, the future is here – and it looks almost exactly like 1986. But the 80s revival is more than just an exercise in nostalgia. At its heart lies a idea which has inspired some of the greatest art and music of the last two centuries. From the Pre-Raphaelites to the punks, the Gothic revival to the 80s revival –artists have been looking to the past for the means to correct the present. Author and triple j broadcaster Craig Schuftan hops in Doc Brown’s DeLorean and takes us back... to the future.

Craig Schuftan is the author of The Culture Club and Hey! Nietzsche! Leave Them Kids Alone – the first book to explore the secret influence of romantic poetry and philosophy on rock and roll. He also presents The Culture Club on triple j, and is currently working on an upcoming comedy series for the station in collaboration with Chris Taylor and Andrew Hansen of The Chaser. His next book will tell the story of the rise and fall of rock and roll in the 90s, and will be published by Harper Collins just in time for the 90s revival.
