Anode 2009
Anode is a season of art events connecting independent, local and experimental artists in unique spaces across Sydney and Melbourne from 30 October to 5 December 2009.
Taking the focus off the idea of curator-as-dictator, Anode looks at the array of art, film, music, installation, design and performance happening right under our noses while celebrating the idea that everyone is a creator. Collectively curated through networks and groups in Sydney and Melbourne, there are no themes and no dictates from above. Over 200 artists, musicians, performers, filmmakers, designers, writers and curators will take over warehouses, rooftops, café menu-boards, an incinerator, a public car park and gallery strips during this season of local and independent art-appreciation. The 2009 program kicks off on 30th October at 1000 £ Bend in Melbourne and 21st November at Paddington Town Hall in Sydney, with a screening of Beautiful Losers, gallery works and a festival bash.

Background
The roots of this project started back in 2007 when Tiani Chillemi was the Executive Producer of the first Underbelly Public Arts Lab + Festival at CarriageWorks in Sydney. The free 10 day public arts lab involving over 200 artists and 1 day ticketed festival sold out, attracting over 2000 art and music fans in July of 2007. The event went on to win the Best Arts Event category at the inaugural Sydney Music Arts + Culture awards (SMAC) hosted by FBI Radio and Time Out Sydney in 2008. Click here for the full program
THE DAILY TELEGRAPH
“Bravo to last weekend’s sold-out Underbelly one-day arts festival at CarriageWorks. Fringe became the new mainstream, as mums and dads mingled with arch scenesters. The artworks, music, movies and “happenings” exploited the cavernous complex perfectly. Roll on, Underbelly 2008.
SUNDAY ARTS ABC TV
“It was amazing....it was like a music festival for arts...the night was awesome and the crowd loved it”
REAL TIME ARTS
“Saturday night, the main event for the inagural underbelly Festival was a packed house, a sell out at $25 a pop. There were disco dancers in roller skates, puppet shows, video installations and baroque living dolls, the emphasis was on simultaneity, a giant show & tell in which everyone was talking at once, and it worked a treat.”
There was a lot of interaction, collaboration and inter-connectivity through this project which continues to inspire future arts practice and events.
